Dad had an active weekend

Dad had an active weekend (After an active week-Ilene asked if his medication had been changed). We spend Saturday afternoon at my house. Dad watched some golf. Then we went back to his house for a chicken enchilada and snapper meal. We watched an Iwo Jima movie about the men who raised the flag.

Sunday Bettie watched Dad. I told him I would be back at 9 p.m.-he was wide awake (Sometimes he is asleep when I get back at that time) . Bettie said he was very active walking around, getting cheese out of the refrigerator, etc. Dad started talking a lot, asking all kinds of questions--He kept asking how much the electric bill was. He actually got up and turned off the lamp in the living room, as well as the light over the dining room table.

On Monday Dad had gotten up in the middle of the night and left the toilet seat up. He was sitting at the end of the bed watching TV. (Usually he stays in bed until I get him up). He seemed more alert than he has been recently. Plus he was getting around a lot without his cane.

When we got to the podiatrist he told the assistant that his wife had died. He seemed to think it was just a few days ago though. We talked about the upcoming trip to Florida. I hope he enjoys seeing Jennie and Anice and my cousins.

Panthers Win this Weekend

On Saturday we had a nice fish meal from the dining hall.

It was exciting to watch the Panthers beat Atlanta on Sunday evening. Dad followed the game fairly well. We had Pizza and salad with ice cream for dessert.

This morning Dad woke up. He said he wanted to "mustard" his money, not sure what that means.

Dad put together some simple puzzles last week. His favorite one was "Santa Claus" according to Ilene.

Dad's Wednesday

I woke up and took Dad to the Senior Services before lunch. Then I went to my yoga class.

At dinner time I took off work and picked up Dad and the dinner at the dining hall. Dad had fish with shrimp, potatoes, tomatoes, and zucchini. I had the pork fried rice with eggroll and Dad's leftovers. Jack Hughes across the street came over for dessert. They had apple cobbler and I had some fancy apple and walnut dessert.

Suzie and Jacob came over about 7:30 and watched Dad until I could come back from work.

This morning went quickly. After breakfast Ilene came by. I then went out for a jog. I came back and talked awhile with Ilene. She plans to make a fall wreath.

Dad's Weekend

Not much happened on Saturday. After a rainy Friday it was very sunny.

On Sunday Dad and I did some yoga in the morning. He sits in the chair and moves his arms up. In the afternoon I went to the symphony. When I came back I fixed my favorite Sunday night meal--Pizza! There was cheesecake as well, leftover from noon dinner that Dad and Bettie ate.

Monday morning Dad got up before me and walked around; he even went into the computer room (which he never does) and looked outside. Then he peeked in my room. but I couldn't quite make myself wake up. When I got up he was sitting in the dining room looking out the window. He was watching the Monday morning traffic on the main road. He said he was waiting for "the army to show up".

Visit from Bayada

I received a phone message from the Bayada nurse who visited Dad this week. She reports that all is fine. She gave him the B12 shot, took his readings - all good. She examined the swollen area on his arm and reports no change, no redness and no soreness or pain, so there is no concern. He has a rash on this back, which is being treated with powder. She will return on October 9th at 10am.

Dad's Weekend

It was a quiet weekend. I had to work 1/2 day on Saturday while Bettie watched Dad. Then I came home and we had flounder dinners from the dining hall. Dad watched football and I fell asleep on the couch. I woke up after Midnight and got Dad to bed.

Sunday I fixed waffles with a special pineapple-banana orange sauce. Then Bettie came over and I went to church and then to eat at Panera Bread with Susan. I then went to the Crafts store and bought some modeling clay and coloring books that look like stained glass when you put them against the window.

Dad watched some more football and I worked on the puzzle.

Yoga with Dad

I did some Yoga with Dad using Yoga for Dummies tape. Dad was moving around in the chair a lot lifting his arms and legs. Today he actually stood up for the balance pose. He also got down on the floor and attempted a cobra, but gave up saying too hard for him. He sat in the chair again and moved around a lot.

I will pick up the brunch, go to my house. I may or may not go to the pool, depending if Suzie and Jacob are able to stop by.

Karen Berg, PA Visit on Wednesday

Karen came for her visit. It has been six weeks since the last visit. She asked Dad a few questions. He replied that he was miserable but when she asked further he said that in general he was doing fine. She also checked the "hard place on his inner arm" and seemed to think it was doing okay. She will plan a visit in about 3 months. She said we can call at any time if something comes up. (I have her card next to the phone in the kitchen.)

Afterwards I talked a bit with Ilene and we talked about changing her schedule. She will look it over and share her thoughts soon. She was open to all my suggestions.

I also mentioned the laundry detergent usage and Ilene said that her son thinks she uses too much also so it doesn't bother her to be criticized. She will try to limit her wash to two times a week with small and/or "emergency" loads in between.

I told Ilene that my sisters think she is doing a great job!

Dad's Weekend

Saturday went well. Dad watched a lot of golf and I worked on the jigsaw puzzle (after going to my morning exercise class in the morning).

Later we went outside and looked at the tomato, pepper and watermelon plants that Ilene had planted. Dad had mentioned that he needed to clean out the gutters so I thought he might want to go outside for awhile. I did a little weeding and Dad sat on the side. He took a slight tumble while seated, but was okay, since he didn't fall much and it was on the grass. (Next time I will not let him walk with his slippers on; he might have had better balance with shoes). He laid there for awhile and then said how decrepit he felt.

After a while we went back in and had a nice fish meal. On Sunday we watched some more golf. Dad's eyes really lit up when he watched Tiger Woods sink the winning putt!

Today Dad complained that someone took $26,000 out of the account. They made him sign a paper. I told him we would call up Chip later and talk about it and that seemed to satisfy him.

Dad had a nice weekend. He stayed most of Saturday with Bettie while I went home, did some yoga, went to church and went shopping.

On Sunday Bettie came again while I went out for the afternoon to jog. That evening we watched Big Brother and looked at the tomato plants that Ilene planted and added some stakes for stability.

Dad suffered a bit of uncontrolled diarrhea, but seemed okay after a while. He had some Pepto Bismol and I did not give him the Senna that evening.

Monday morning Dad went to the dentist for a cleaning. Diane mentioned that Dad seemed to be doing better. Maybe the increased medications are helping!

Dad's Visit with Dr. Reifler

Dr. Reifler came by today to see Dad, accompanied by a reporter from Raleigh News & Observer. The doctor had gotten a promotion and so the paper wanted to do a story on his visits with patients. So he asked if he could visit with Dad.

I came by to greet the doctor and nurse educator. He asked a few questions about Dad and the navy. Dad said he had mostly served on cruisers. How they had 18"? guns. The doctor asked about the difference between cruisers, ? and destroyers in terms of sizes. Dad explained this easily. However when the doctor asked how many sailors there was on a cruiser Dad started wringing his hands a bit, but finally said 3500 men (I don't ever recall him saying this--it is probably something hard to remember!).

Then I went to the back room with the nurse educator and she talked with me and Ilene about communicating with Alzheimers patients. She left a couple of booklets to look at. She also said she might mail some activity sheets as well.

Dad continued to talk with Doctor in private for a few minutes.

The educator said they might start Dad on anti-depressant but want to wait and see if Karen the PA could come out and do an evaluation as well before they prescribed one (She came out a month ago as well). They had increased his Namenda last week to 2x a day. He seems slightly better---not sure why, just a gut feeling.

Dad flattered me by saying "I know everything", I said "I love hanging out with this guy!"

When they were leaving the reporter said he would send a copy of the article when it comes out.

Dad went to Symphony

Not only did Dad say he wanted to die, but that he WOULD die that evening. However, he has always been predicting his death (in the last 20 years), so I tried to cheer him up by reminding him of that. Also I said that I would miss him, that I needed to take care of him, that he is a good example to other people, etc. I hope it helped him!

Dad and I attended the symphony on Sunday afternoon. I was able to get an inexpensive senior ticket in the handicapped area (with individual chairs) at the Stevens Center.

Dad did not have much reaction to the music, but he said he enjoyed it. And it was a nice walk (about a block). I may take him to the New Years Pops concert next year.

During the weekend I worked on the jigsaw puzzle, and watched Dad. We are eating more in the dining room so that we can watch TV. Also since Dad stays at the table for a while after I am finished eating, I can be in the same room with him and it seems more friendly.
