Dad's week

Last weekend, Dad experienced quite a bout of painful hemorrhoids. I first became aware of it last Friday evening after Lois' shift. During a trip to the bathroom I could see how inflamed they were (external, and quite large and protruding!) I applied Tucks pads that night and he seemed to sleep comfortably. On Saturday, with Lois, it was day 3 since he had a bowel movement...they tried a couple of times with no success. By the evening, I tried inserting a Prep H suppository while at the toilet, but he was really reactive and complaining, so I couldn't get it all the way in (to be honest, couldn't even see around the hemorrhoids where to put it!)...anyway, it dropped out in the toilet. I was able to apply Prep H cream all around the area. He went to bed that night and still slept OK.

THe next morning, fortunately, I had Lois (Haydee got the flu last week so had to cancel...Lois agreed to come in on Sunday, her normal day off...she had asked if she could take Dad to church with her, which I agreed to.) Anyway, they never made it as Lois stayed with Dad mostly on the bed and in his room that day. He was very uncomfortable and could hardly move. She was able to insert a couple of suppositories during the day. By the end of her day, they had had success with the bowel movement, so Dad was quite relieved as you can imagine. I have to say I was quite impressed with her demeanor and treatment of Dad throughout the day, not to mention her patience! Per California labor laws, since that day was her 7th day in a row of 8 hour or more days, she was to be paid double-time...she definitely deserved it in my opinion.

During this past week, Lois has continued to give Dad the suppositories to help bring the hemorrhoids down. His BMs have been fairly regular, so it doesn't appear they are as bad. He has however clearly become a bit traumatized...he's doing this thing of "screeching" or saying "Ahhh!" when you barely touch him, for wiping example.

I'm also a bit disappointed in myself and Dad's new doctor...he had an appointment with the GP, Dr. Gee, this past Thursday. My understanding of this appointment was that he was to do a full bloodwork for Dad...we had talked last time about following the every 6 months that Dr. Lichstein had done. I was planning to meet Dad and Lois at the doctor's office around 11:30 (appointment was at 11am), because I had some work to take care of at home first...I assumed I would have plenty of time to be there when the doctor was with Dad (assuming the nurse would be doing other checks first.) Well somehow the appointment was listed only as a "blood pressure follow-up", and when I arrived at 11:30, Dad and Lois were just walking back into the waiting room. I went into the back to ask to speak to the doctor, but apparently he was already gone. They sent the nurse out and she said he was probably gone for the weekend! Lois did say she asked about the hemorrhoids, though the doctor didn't examine him...he said to continue with the suppositories. I asked the nurse to have him call me this week and I suppose we'll get on the schedule again to do a more thorough examination.

Today Lois asked if she could take Dad to lunch with her at Red Lobster...she wanted it to be her treat, saying it was like a "father's day" gift for her. Dad is scheduled to go to Ken's next weekend (first visit since the full week when Paul and I were in Fiji.) He will be going to Ken & Judy's new house! Ken...does Judy deal much with patients and hemorrhoids at her job?

I haven't had a chance to try out Dad's new laptop yet, but it did arrive. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks. Ryland and Dylan both have "promotions' this coming week (8th and 5th grades), so lots of parties and events scheduled.

Visit With Dad

It was difficult coming to see Dad, I was anxious to see how he was doing. I was relieved to see he was getting good care from Lois. Lois is very disciplined and has Dad on a schedule that helps him.

Things are more hectic at Ken's house, but Kenny seems very caring and helpful with Dad. Judy is very busy with her work and children, but seems very caring towards Dad as well. The only thing is that the change of coming to Ken's house makes Dad regress such that he only gets settled in by the time he has to go back! I recommended to Ken that he get a toilet seat riser that would help Dad sit down easier. They are on sale at the pharmacy near his home and also I have one that I could mail.

I really wish Dad was back in Winston-Salem! I go back and forth because obviously he would need to be in a nursing home and of course that is not as good as one-on-one care that he is getting with Lois and living in a home is also a better situation. When I asked him he said he wanted to go back to Winston-Salem, (but it would not be the same situation of course).

DAD is very much a part of my life; I still feel emotionally attached to him especially on weekends, when I normally spend a lot of time with him.

Anyway, this is the end of my Blog--it now belongs to Barb and Ken! Best Wishes and enjoy your time with Dad!

p.s. i might add more later when my thoughts start to gel about the week there.

Dr. Lichstein and Karen Beard

I talked to Dr. Lichstein about Dad. How he probably would be staying in California as he seems to be adapting to it. If he did come back I would have to put him in a nursing home (and Dr. Lichstein agreed with that.), which would not be as nice as the home setting he is in now.

I asked him what stage of Alzheimers Dad was. He said he would consider Dad in the moderate to severe range (though he hasn't given him a test recently). Because he probably would not know what year it was or where he was.

He asked me to record [if and when] Dad starts talking in Latin. A year ago we talked and he mentioned how the old memories stay the longest. I wondered if Dad's memories of Latin would possibly come out!

He said the end stage starts when Dad stops eating and drinking. (I don't think that has happened yet, but occasionally Dad does not eat too well).

Anyway, he thought Dad would not have issues with traveling, such as lung or heart issues.

I also talked to Karen Beard and she would be glad to help look up geriatric psychiatrist for Dad if needed, though she said he doesn't seem to have any behavioral issues.

Response to Barb

I know you mean well, but please do not say that Dad remembers me because he recognizes my picture. (It sounded like I was complaining but really I was just expressing my thoughts.) And that is all the thoughts are.

The truth whether he remembers me or not is what it is. Nothing that I can't deal with.

And certainly when I see him, the memories are what they are, and the time I am there will become memories as well during the time I am there visiting.

More and Melanoma

There was one other thing I forgot to mention in prior response....I guess I don't feel that Dad's alzheimers/dementia has deteriorated since his arrival here. To me, he is more talkative, responsive, and uses more complete sentences than what I recalled, but I'm sure it's a much different perspective when being with him every day versus seeing him on an occasional visit. I'll be very interested to hear what Cathy thinks when she sees him on her upcoming visit.

Dad had the "Mohs" Surgery on his melanoma yesterday (right cheek.) The process involves cutting the area, sending Dad back to waiting room, testing the margins to ensure they've taken enough, and repeating until they have. In Dad's case, it took two times. He came home with a big bandage on his right cheek. Today, the bag under his right eye is bruised, which according to the paperwork is normal. The big bandage has been removed, and there is tape-type bandage on the sutures/cut. He doesn't seem to be experiencing any real pain, but was certainly very tired yesterday, especially considering he had to wake up at 6am in order to be at the office by 7:45. He got to bed around 8:15pm last night, and slept well. He has a follow up next Wednesday, and then we will see when they want to schedule removal of the squaemous cell cancer (right forehead). I think they've said that surgery is more complex, probably because Dad has such tight skin in that area.

Response to Cathy

I just wrote a long response to Cathy's post and it must have crossed paths with Justine's post or something, but it got lost! Anyway, will try to recreate. I said...

I think Dad remembers you and all of us. Lois reviews our pictures with him regularly...sometimes the names don't come, but I truly believe he knows each of us. If anything, yours is the name he does remember! In fact, I just went to remind Dad about your upcoming visit. He responded " I DEFINITELY want to see her," with an emphasis on "definitely"!

Regarding brushing teeth, Dad brushes his teeth by himself for me every night! I have tried to encourage Ken to have Dad do as much for himself as possible...pulling pants down, getting up and down from sitting, getting into bed, etc. It's really a mind-set and requires patience...it's natural to want to help when he's struggling, but for sure if you do it for him, he will do it less and less, which ultimately makes it more difficult for everyone. I have the same expectations with the caregivers and feel that they're doing a good job in this regard. Cathy, if you can assist Ken (assuming he's willing) by modeling some of your approaches, that would be great.

I also feel strongly that keeping Dad active (as much as possible) is good. As I've said before, Lois takes Dad for at least a 5 minute walk around the house twice a day, as well as engaging him in puzzles, reading and other. Ken has said that Dad doesn't do much at his house. This last trip (and on previous visits) Ken reported that he had trouble with Dad waking up in the middle of the night and not going back to bed, and also not eating. I would propose that activity might help to alleviate this. Of course I realize it's easier for me since Dad is here more regularly, and there may be other factors affecting Dad's behavior at his house.

Dad Remembers Me.

I don't get the impression from reading the blog that Dad "remembers me". I suppose he will recognize me when I see him soon. And I think he knows who I am when I call.

I just wonder what stage of Alzheimers he is in now.

I do think changes are hard for Dad now (but I might be so inclined myself to not like changes either), so I wonder how his memory is doing at this time--is it causing more frustrations, or just resignation?

Kenny mentioned that he brushes Dad's teeth now. I wonder if Dad forgot how to do it, or whether it is easier to have a caregiver brush them? I miss Dad brushing his teeth.

Bed time

Just put Dad to bed. I reminded him that he would be visiting Ken and family this weekend. He responded..."It's always nice to see Kenny".

Up Day

Dad had more of an "up" day today. I got him to bed relatively early last night, and this morning when I asked him how he was doing he said "Very Good!". He also showed more energy in his outside walks (We had "dueling walkers" with me and Dylan in his walker, and Dad with Lois in his walker and we crossed paths a few times. It was a nice day here today (high 60's, clear.)

Lois does have Dad read daily...today outside he was reading articles in the newspaper (she points to what he should read and he reads it...so he's not trying to process it, but clearly can still read). It's true that I haven't noticed him lately watching much television, but it was something I've noticed him doing before since he's been here in California.

I purchased a couple of puzzles at TJ Maxx today to add to Dad's repertoire...Lois utilizes these most days. They are the juvenile type that involve matching...one has about 75 pieces, and it takes 3 or 4 pieces to make one complete rectangle which has a picture and a name on it (e.g. "frog" or "sun"). The other has numerous pieces also, and you have to find the matches (e.g., horse hoof with picture of horse). Other suggestions are welcome.

Chip, Jennie...It would also be great to get the Navy discussion video and/or the paper that Faye wrote. Lois still goes through the U.S.S. New Jersey War book we have and if there was more accurate info that would be great.

General observations with Dad

I really enjoyed the opportunity to spend some time with Dad and see how he is doing. He is getting really good care and in general seems to continue to enjoy relatively good health. He mostly eats well and gets exercise every day.

I do think he seems a bit weaker overall since I saw him last, though he still gets around. I didn't observe any times when he wanted to walk without his walker though (which I had seen before on 'good' days). He is not quite as quick to recognize people, and does appear to be confused most of the times I talked with him. He did easily recognize Mom's picture, and us as well. I was showing him older photographs for the most part (when we were kids up to the early 70s). I tried to get him to talk about Navy experiences without too much luck. He mixed up the stories with references to me or other things in the room. He doesn't seem to respond to the television much at all any more - certainly doesn't talk about anything. We watched the Final Four basketball and he wasn't interested. I tried to work with him with a card game based on dominoes (but using pictures), but he said it was too hard to try and match the pictures, so I stopped. I didn't get a chance to try scrabble. He still reads well, so perhaps making words or reading words from the letters would be a good activity.

Barb and I started talking about arrangements for getting Dad to the beach this summer. I'm wondering if it might be his last opportunity to be together with a larger group. I think he could still have years left, I'm not sure such a big trip will be possible much longer.

Dermatologist - update

Barb and I accompanied Dad to the dermatologist (Dr. Iwasaki) on Tuesday, and we discussed in more detail the diagnoses and recommended treatments.

The squaemous cell cancer is on Dad's forehead. It is relatively large, and the doctor explained that surgery would require even larger excision. She recommended doing MOHS surgery (referred to another doctor for this), which provides the opportunity to test during the surgery to determine the depth required to remove all cancerous cells, as well as doing any required skin grafts or skin flaps to repair the surgical excision and minimize scarring.

The basal cell cancer is in a crease between the nose and mouth. Dr. Iwasaki said she would be able to do this surgery in her office, but that we should do the others first.

The melanoma (the most serious), is on Dad's right cheek. Dr. Iwasaki recommends MOHS surgery for this as well. She ordered one more test to be done on the biopsy sample (called a 'stain'), which will verify whether the cancer is superficial (extending only into the first layer of skin) or if some cells have extended further. If the cancer has extended further, it may be necessary to do a lymph node test to see if it has actually penetrated to a lymph node. Results should be received soon. The MOHS surgery has been scheduled for next Wednesday, April 15th.

Only one MOHS surgery can be handled at once, so a second appointment will be required for the squaemous cell cancer, once the first is done.

Once all of these surgeries are complete, Dr. Iwasaki suggests doing a full body inventory of Dad's skin marks to identify any other potential problems. She visually noted at least one on Dad's face (near his eye), but wants to wait until all the current surgeries are done before completing the inventory and determining a treatment plan according to priority.

Dermatologist report

Barb heard from the dermatologist Friday evening. Dad has 3 different cancers. One is a melanoma, one a basal cell and one a squaemous cell. We will take Dad to see her on Tuesday and discuss the treatments. She wants to do a full inventory of his skin as well. Barb couldn't remember if he had had any melanomas before. I sort of thought he had, but not sure. We will also try to get Southard to forward records to the new doctor's office.

Dad's Dreams & Conversations

I am glad to hear that Dad is still able to carry on a conversation with Barb, Ken and/or the caregivers. That is nice that he can understand enough to respond to remarks.

It is nice also to hear that it might have even been fun! Not sure, but the snake conversation sounded very interesting--something that Dad is fearful of, yet maybe would like to confront? Or just a dream to get rid of the tension in his life.

I think Dad might have said a similar comment to me once.

The comment that Barb said to Justine that "she was also your daughter" was interesting as well.

Dermatologist visit

Dad was able to get a last minute appointment with the dermatologist this past Monday. There were 3 spots on Dad's face she was concerned about, and wanted to do biopsies, which we agreed to. One of the spots was a dark irregular shaped one on his upper right cheek area. Perhaps he's had that checked out before...I looked at photos I had from when Dad was first here (Dec/Jan) and he did have it. The other spot was the one at the top right of his forehead...looks like he may have had that before too...I noticed it when it got more red than usual. Third one she wanted to check was a pimple-looking mark to the left of his mouth in the crease area. Dad braved the needles for the lidocaine to numb the areas, as well as some pressure when she cut the skin for the samples. I don't think he liked it. On the way out to the elevator he said "I just as well die." He has an appointment on April 6th to get the results. Which brings me to the question of us discussing whether certain procedures will be worth it or not. If it gets to that point (hopefully not), we should probably have a skype to discuss.

Justine will actually be here for that next appointment...she's coming to visit Dad (April 3-8) and will also help me with finalizing his taxes, preparing his first quarterly state tax payment and other as needed. When I mentioned to Dad that Justine would be coming soon, he said, "it's nice that you'll get to visit with your sister." To which I said, "and you your daughter!"

Dad is off to Ken's for a 3-day weekend. Lois drove him there this afternoon.

Visits to Dermatologist and Dentist

I hope Dad has a good visit with the dermatologist. He hasn't been to see Dr. Southard for over a year, so you could mention that he has his upper back, shoulders and face examined on a regular basis for possible growths that are "frozen" off.

I just cancelled Dad's Dentist appointment with Dr. Clarke for teeth cleaning. It would have been for April 6.

Sunday

Dad didn't seem as tired today and was transitioning much better. Definitely seemed in better spirits this evening too. I love it whenever he gets up and as he's walking, if he sees something to eat, say on the counter, he will grab it and eat it while he's walking...tonight, there was a bowl of pistachios and I had to tell him to spit it out because he had grabbed the whole thing including the outer shell. Tonight when I put him to bed he said "Make sure you don't wrap me up with that snake." LOL.

Dad this week

Lately it seems that Dad has been more tired. It has also been more difficult to get him to get up from sitting (he'll say he wants to get up, but then wants to rub his arms repeatedly, in almost a ritual-like fashion.) It takes quite a bit of prompting, and sometimes really grabbing his arm to get him to stand up. Lois said that he's still doing his walks each day, but she has noticed the same difficulty in transitioning him.

Earlier this week, I had the sense that Dad was "stewing" and was perhaps mad at me for some reason. I noticed it first one night when after dinner, he didn't want to get up and go to the bathroom, or move over to the couch. When I tried to get him to get up he sort of said angrily, "I'm going to stay here for an hour!". Eventually I got him to bed (after 10:30pm that night.) The next night, he seemed to have a similar "sourness" about him. So I looked at him and said, "Dad, are you mad at me, why are you mad at me?" and he responded something like "because you're not spending the money like you should." We went back and forth a little with me trying to understand the gist of what he was saying and his comments vascillated between "you need to spend all the money today" and "you don't have any money, you're using my money", "you're not doing the right thing", 'you've got to spend the money," "it's not in the bank" and such. He made one comment about not knowing where his money was, so I got out the computer to try and show him his checking account balance, money market and expenses and trying to reassure him that he does have money, and that it's safe and that I'm doing my best to manage it and that I share information regularly with Chip, Justine, Cathy, Jennie, Ken. Of course I realize it's probably not a good idea to challenge him, but it's hard when he looks at me and tells me "you're not doing it right!" I tried to remain calm and responded that I loved him and I didn't understand why he was mad at me. EVentually I said "do you trust anyone Dad?" and he responded "Well I trust you, " so then I said well good, because I loved him and I'm doing the best I can to help take care of him. After that, he seemed to back down and since has lost that "sourness" and seems more friendly. Ultimately I do think it was a good idea for me to directly address what I was feeling and to discuss it with him, even though I realize that his thoughts are probably not clear on the entire matter.

My theory is that perhaps Dad's thoughts wander and he makes presumptions...every day while Lois is here, he sees me quite busy in and out and around the house doing all sorts of things, on my computer, on the phone, etc and he does not get a lot of direct conversation with me during those times. I think maybe from his perspective I'm being secretive? It probably also doesn't help that we do have CNN on TV a lot, particularly in the evening when we are in the family room, and of course there's lots of money discussions about banks, etc. Who knows. Anyway, I'm glad that he's been more pleasant to me since then, though I am still concerned about his slow-moving.

Oh, the other interesting story was early last week when Dad was telling me how there was an 8-foot snake in his bed. He had mentioned something before when we were going to bed about there being snakes at the bottom of the bed. Then, that night last week, he mentioned the 8-foot snake again, and I said I don't think there's any snakes in here, and I pulled the covers all teh way down and he said "I know, I held it in my hands!" I wondered if it might be one of my cats, who I have seen go in his room and sleep at the bottom of the bed. I tried to suggest to Dad, "maybe it was the cat" and he said, "No it wasn't a cat. I ought to know. I held it in my hands, I know it was a snake, an 8-foot snake!"

Also, after Dad's last visit with Ken & Judy (weekend of March 6 and start of Daylight Savings), on Sunday, March 8th (Happy belated birthday Chip and Jacob!), he had gone to bed around 10. That night around midnight I heard something in his room over the monitor. Paul and I were still up. He had gotten up (1st time at my house getting up at night!) and had made his way over towards the door and had actually fallen down. Paul and I helped him up and he was jovial about it and said he wasn't hurt, except small scrape on his arm (rug burn perhaps.) Got him to go back to bed, then around 2am I heard him again (from the monitor in my room) and went down and found him up again. He was saying he needed to find his suit in the closet and seemed concerned about getting dressed. He was confused about the time and I kept trying to say he had a lot more sleeping to do, it was middle of the night, we'd get dressed in the morning, etc. He wanted me to leave a light on, and ultimately needed me to show him the clock as well, which I put on the chair right next to the bed so he could see it. He asked me to do that for the next couple of nights, but since has not asked for it.

I noticed a slightly raised red mark on Dad's forehead. I have put a call into a dermatologist (recommended by my friend) to set up an appointment. I also have made a dentist appointment for him with a dentist recommended by my kids' dentist. He goes back to the Podiatrist on the 30th of March.

Visit at Senior Services

I went to the Senior Services Center to deliver some partly-knitted baby hats and scarves that Mom had started. The lady at the center said that several of the people could knit and they might enjoy knitting on projects already started.

Dad this week

On Monday Dad had his appointment with Dr. Gee. I brought in the most recent report from Dr. Lichstein and he agreed with all the medications that had been prescribed. He suggested in general we see him every 6 months, starting in 4 months (to line up with Dad's last appt with Lichstein and do bloodwork at that time, etc.) Dad was friendly, but not that aware...couldn't say that he was in California. Brought up being on a ship for 12 months. He weighed 147 (with shoes on.) His temperature was low (95.) His blood pressure was a little high, but the doctor thought that could have been the effort of getting into the office, on the table and being somewhere new. The doctor mentioned that with many of the dementia patients he sees, many are doing fairly well physically, like Dad. I didn't inquire further, but wondered later if he meant as opposed to Alzheimer's or exactly what.

Earlier in the week, Dad got agitated one night about money (same day we had CNN for some time talking about the stimulus package.) He started to get angry with me telling me I had to put my money in that fund. This is the hardest part for me, when Dad gets upset with me for something he doesn't understand. I have to work on trying to divert his attention I suppose. I tried saying that I was talking to all of you and that his money was safe, etc, though at one point I was a little upset and had to ask him not to yell at me (it's so hard not to take it personally!) Later he even said "you're taking my money". I had to walk away to the kitchen. He got up from the dinner table and just stood for awhile. Eventually he said "well I hope the bank turns you down" but then calmed down after that. However, the next day, he asked Lois for his wallet so I believe it is still on his mind.

One other quirky thing I noted...when sitting on the toilet, I noticed Dad always would take the toilet paper and "roll" it over the back. I figured out that he thinks the toilet roll should unfold to the back, not the front, so I changed it around and now he doesn't do that.

Dad had his usual berries/fruit with a dab of whip cream for dessert tonight, but I also gave him a small chocolate heart candy Dylan had gotten for Valentines. On the way to bed, he worked his way to the counter to grab the other piece of candy that was there. He certainly doesn't seem to have any problems with his eyesight!

Dad will head to Ken & Judy's tomorrow afternoon.

Addendum

I forgot to also mention that this evening Dad called to me in the kitchen (from the couch in the family room), saying "What do I do now Jennie?"

Also, about a week or ten days ago, I was showing him the large photo of all of us 6 kids with Mom & Dad from the beach in the black frame that i sent out here from W-S. He was naming everyone as I asked him. When I pointed to Jennie, he said "that's Ruby", and I said "no, Ruby's your sister, that's your daughter, Jennie". He gave a belly laugh. He got everyone but couldn't name me! When I said, "that's me, Barbara", again I got a belly laugh.

Dad's Rainy Monday

Ken brought Dad home last night and reported a good weekend (though said Dad didn't seem to eat much). Today was a rainy, windy and cold day in LA, and we had a planned electricity outage from 10 to 4 (while they did some upgrades). Dad and Lois took it in stride and seemed to have a good day. My kids were out of school, but we were in and out with some dentist and doctor's appointments.

Anyway, this evening and a little bit last night for that matter, I noticed that Dad seemed to be walking and moving around with more strength. Particularly, tonight, he was moving much quicker in his walker, and initiating actions with less prompting (getting up, pulling his own pants down in the toilet, maneuvering to the right spots, etc.) He actually was in quite a jolly mood this evening as well. He cracked up when I asked him how old he would be in 3 days on his birthday. He kept mentioning something about some "medal on a chain", and how it must have been moved from the drawer, and then he would laugh. He brought up Allen's name as well. Just seemed to be in good spirits overall, and quicker in his responses and physical movement. We also watched the president's press briefing...in general it seems to me that Dad pays more attention to the television here than what I remember, but I probably wasn't paying close enough attention. Also, I have the large screen, so that might help. I tend to keep the TV on CNN in the evening. I think Lois and he watch I Love Lucy at Noon every day.

I'm still feeling quite good about the work Lois is doing. She interacts and talks with him quite a bit. For example, today she was reviewing his old Navy boat yearbook with him and letting him tell the stories about it. Also, she's very diligent about the exercises and walking.

Dad's Weekend

Dad had a nice weekend. Lois worked on Saturday 8 to 4, and also came today 8 to Noon. (Haydee will normally work Sundays, but couldn't make it today, so Lois agreed to work.)

Speaking of Lois, she's really working out great. She's very conscientious and in my opinion has a wonderful demeanor for Dad. They read the paper together (and helps Dad to look at the ads.) SHe also mentioned that she thought Dad must have exercised a lot in the past. She said yesterday on one of their walks (they take at lest two a day outside) that when she praised him, he seemed motivated to show her he could do more! Dad really seems to like her. He was talking to her today about looking forward to seeing her with her family. I've attached a photo.

WE will go watch the game now!

Closed up 2191 Homestead Hills Drive

Well, the house is offically closed. There was one thing, beyond the wear and tear, which was a hole in the wallboard at the back of the garage.

The house looked quite clean; I cleaned the oven and refrigerator. Penny said the counter would be replaced. And of course painted.

She doesn't think that anyone is interested yet, but she said they would be fixing it up very quickly, because if someone was interested they would want a larger home (like Dad's).

Anyway, I hope it sells fast!

Dad's day

Dad had another good day. Seeming to nap less than before, and moving around better as I said yesterday. Tonight he seemed a little more restless, wanting to get up and move around and focused on something about some paperwork that some man has for him. Earlier in the day he enjoyed reading Faye's thank you note. He could read many of the words, though I had to explain who "Avril Lavigne" was. He is currently having strawberries and whip cream for dessert on the couch.

Dad's Wednesday

Dad was walking and moving stronger and seemed more alert today. Earlier in the week he seemed to be moving slow, and shuffling more. I definitely noticed the difference today, and last night as well. He and Lois took a lot of little walks outside today, and enjoyed the nice weather. I will try to remember to call the insurance company tomorrow.

Update on Dad

We are settling into the routine of Lois caring for Dad daily from 8 to 4. Dad usually goes to bed between 9:30 and 10pm and thus far has slept all night (or stayed in bed at least, and I can usually hear snoozing in the morning when I'm getting the kids up) until 8am, which is when Lois arrives to rouse him and start his day.She is maintaining his daily log, which I expanded to include identification of morning and afternoon activities, as well as walks. She usually spends the 1st hour in his bathroom/bedroom, helping him shower, toilet and get dressed, then he has breakfast around 9am. They've started watching Price Is Right, which I told her he might recognize. She is doing his daily exercises prescribed by the doctor as well. She mentioned that Dad talked to her a lot yesterday morning, but I didn't get the opportunity to ask her any details about the conversation. Today the weather was warming up again, so they had lunch and spent some time outside. Ryland has a cool US States puzzle that they do on occasion.

Yesterday we took Dad to the podiatrist. He was referred by my friend, the doctor, but I also know his wife (fellow Mom from Cornerstone.) He clipped Dad's toenails. I asked him about the fact that Dad has complained of pain in his left heel, and also what Lois had noticed of a slightly swollen right ankle...Podiatrist felt the area looking for Dad's reactions...said it didn't seem to be anything external, and mentioned it is likely "plantar fascia?" or something like that (common ailment for elderly when ligaments or tendons break down? He just recommended making sure Dad doesn't walk often barefoot (which he doesn't), and also suggested encouraging the walking, as well as doing "toe raises" from his walker. I forgot to ask the doctor (actually, I had to leave early to retrieve Dylan, so Lois stayed with him), but I had asked the nurse who took us to the room about the fungus. Her comment was that the medicine only works in 75% of those to whom it is given, and because of the potential impacts to the liver, would not often be prescribed for someone like Dad. It doesn't seem to bother him, and the nails actually looked much better and cleaned up last night when we got ready for bed.

Dad seemed to enjoy his dinner tonight. Ryland usually sits with him at the Family Room table for dinner, while Dylan and I are eating at the counter.

Dad arrived again last night for visit. He had dinner. He seemed tired. I was tired also and went to bed after 9:00. Dad slept well, but hasn't made BM yet. Today it was raining, so we didn't do much. Dad is relaxing in chair, and watching basketball game.

Dad Missed Two Concerts

Dad was unable to attend two concerts this month with me. New Years Eve and Broadway Diva concert. However, I was able to find someone to take his place, Katherine Rhew's friend, Joy Munden. She was happy to attend, especially since Dad's seat was in the handicapped section!

Anyway, I missed Dad's presence but it was nice to share the concert with someone nice!

Dad at Kenny's House Day 2-3

Dad is enjoying another day at my house. I called at Lunchtime to see how Dad was doing. Judy gave him macaroni and cheese, and he ate it all. We moved the small tv to living room so he could sit on big chair, and stay there instead of his room. For dinner he ate steak and rice. I forgot to give him his evening medicine on Wednesday, so I made sure not to forget again. This may have caused his current constipated state. He sat on toilet for a while and may have had BM, but not sure, as I wasn't brave enough to look.

We tried to played cribbage, but didn't seem very interested. I had Zeek hold his cards. Zeek had never played cribbage before, but with my help, he managed to score 60 first, and win (only half a game)

He slept well but was all wet when he woke up this morning (1-09-09). Judy and I gave him a shower. I think that made him feel a lot better. He ate fiber 1 cereal for breakfast with banannas. He ate most of it, but wouldn't finish it.

I called Judy at lunch. He had egg sandwich, and cantaloupe for lunch, and is currently resting. I am going to get prunes for him to eat on way home.

Dad's Day 2-3 at Kenny's House

(recreating this from memory)
Thursday (1-08-09)
Dad had breakfast of scrambled eggs and english muffin after waking up a 6:00 am, with the rest of the family. His new place is sitting in the big leather chair in the living room. For lunch he had macaroni and cheese. The kids played around in the living room with him watching. He had steak and rice, and broccoli. After dinner, I sat with him and watched football game. We tried to play cribbage, but Dad wasn't interesting in participating, except to watch where the pegs were moved. Zeek played Dad's cards with my help. He actually got to 60 points first, and was declared the winner. Dad sat on toilet about 8:30, and possibly may have gone poop based on the odor. I was too afraid to look, and Judy wouldn't wake up to look. Dad went to bed at 9:00, along with everyone else

Friday (1-09-09)
Judy and I gave Dad a shower. He ate Fibre one cereal with banannas for breakfast. I called at lunch to hear how he was doing. Judy said he ate egg sandwich. For dinner tonight he had fried chicken and salad. He also drank prune juice. He seemed to be in good spirits tonight
I just spent 30 minutes typing into new blog, and I lost it. If it doesn't show up by tonight, I'll retype it then

Dad is now at Kenny's house

I called Judy at lunch, to see if Dad had arrived at my house. Judy said he got there around 10 am. Judy said he was tired, and is now sleeping in the chair, while watching tv. He ate an english muffin.

Keeping the Home Warm

Well, I have been going over to Dad's house just about every day to check on it. I get the mail, etc. Also try to clean up a bit.

Right now I am working on Dad's unemployment taxes for the end of the year. I will soon be working on W3 forms for the ladies when Barb starts doing the taxes.

I hope to go over today and do some yoga, computer work, work on my puzzle.

Maybe we can set up a skype at Ken's house this weekend. I will ask him.

Dad's Day in LA

Dad seemed to move around more easily today and also speak a little more coherently. A few "set me ups" but other more appropriate uses of words as well. For example, around 4pm we were going on our regular walk to the mailbox, and then around the back of the house...turning around at the mailbox he said "I don't like this", and so I replied, "What don't you like?" He said "this is more your thing", so I then said, "OK, I'm sorry, I thought you wanted to go for a walk, do you want to go back inside?" Then he said, "Well I do want to go for a walk" and then we continued around the back, until eventually going back inside. I think that he didn't like having to go to the mailbox (when I get and sort my mail into the recycling bin) because there is a particular section of the driveway near the mailbox that might be a little harder for him to maneuver (I'm right there to assist as needed.) Anyway, I suppose not that coherent, but in my mind he was engaged at least.

We took a trip to the grocery store today...after walking from the car to the pharmacy area, he sat and waited patiently while I shopped. They had a blood pressure machine and it recorded 111/63...not sure how accurate that is. By the way, the pharmacist told Paul that the Metoprol that he takes for blood pressure should be taken at night, though his schedule shows AM. Did Lichstein ever say anything about that?

Overall, It does seem to me that he is feeling quite comfortable at my house...just as we have to shift him tomorrow to Ken & Judy's! I have been giving him the heads up today that that is the plan, and that he'd be returning here next week.

Eating, sleeping, pooping is continuing to go well.

Dad's Weekend

On Saturday, woke Dad around 8:30, showered, shaved, dressed and had breakfast. After breakfast he finally had the BM on the toilet I had been waiting for....and it was a doozy! Watched Baby Mozart with Dylan in the Family Room. Though he seemed to stay awake a bit longer in the morning, he slept a lot when resting between lunch and a walk in the afternoon. Had his Mexican seabass, rice and vegetable leftovers for dinner and seemed to enjoy it more than the first time.

On Sunday, we slept in a little longer...woke him up around 9:15am. On greetings, he consistently is saying he "wants me to set him up". Typically, in the mornings, if he has leaked through his diaper at all, he takes a shower (and when I ask him, he says that's what he wants to do). Otherwise, I use a washcloth with perineal wash and help him wash his "private parts."

After breakfast (today, Fiber 1 honey cluster cereal, Cranberry/OJ, eng muffin with butter and jam, slice of bacon), he had a bowel movement on the toilet. Hopefully he has settled into that routine, as it looks like, based on his daily log, that was about the time he would do it in NC. Though, he ended up having another one around 5pm.

We had a couple brief walks outside---gorgeous clear day, high around 62.

Had Roast Beef & Swiss on Double fiber bread sandwich for lunch, with a banana. Popcorn for late afternoon snack (Kettle corn form the local farmer's market--where I went today during Scrabble), and chicken breast, rice, peas and salad for dinner. Fresh berries and whip cream, with a couple choc chip cookies for dessert. Seems to be eating well.

For his pills, instead of giving them all to him in a small medicine cup, I'm giving them to him 1 or 2 at a time, and having him stick out his tongue for me to place them on to help him swallow them whole, instead of chewing as he had been. It can be a bit challenging as he doesn't seem to fully understand sticking his tongue out, and when he does, won't hold his mouth very open (I'm tyring to get them to the back of tongue.) It does seem to be working in terms of him not chewing the pills though.

Went to bed right before 10pm. Seems difficult for him to get on his side, but we managed it.

New Year's Day

(Warning of a personal hygiene-detailed post to follow!)

Dad had a pretty good day. We finally had some good timing with the toileting so that we didn't need to change his morning diaper until this evening (up until then, he had only pooped, but not peed in the toilet.) Unfortunately, though, he is on day 3 of no pooping. I also noticed what I think are hemorrhoids so I've been cleaning with some Tucks pads.

For the 2nd day in a row, we took a walk outside/around my house and then we spent a few minutes bouncing the basketball back and forth to each other. Today, I decided to add calling out the alphabet as we bounced (I bounce "a", he bounced back "b", etc.) We did that several times, then we expanded to counting by twos, odds, then evens, then by tens. I think he liked it, but seemed glad when he got to retire in his favorite leather chair for a snack, nap and then watch Dylan on his bike.' If anyone has good suggestions for "mental games" for Dad, please share.

Tonight, we went out to dinner for a Mexican meal (Dad had Mexican seabass, rice and beans). He ate only about half, so we brought home the leftovers. Currently having berries and cream while we watch Deal or No Deal. Hopefully we'll have success on the toilet before bed!

Day 4

We seem to be settling into somewhat of a routine. Dad's learning his way around the house and such. Ate well today...3 meals, plus a couple of snacks. Really liked the fresh berries and whipped cream for dessert. Did his leg exercises on the couch. Still napping a lot when sedentary but did have a good walk from the parking lot to Dylan's physical therapy location. Enjoyed watching me and Dylan bike ride again from the sun porch couch.

Day 3 in California

Dad was a little less confused today, and seemed happier. Still slept a lot, and took naps during the day. I think he found his favorite spot in my house which is a nice leather chair on our "sun porch" that looks out over our patio/pool area. It's a very warm spot and he sat down and watched (and slept) while Dylan rode his bike outside.

We went to CVS in late afternoon and Dad said he was up for walking around the store with me (with his walker.) About half way through the store I started to "smell" something. By the time we got home, he had leaked through his pants, so we had a bit of clean up to do. We had already taken a shower that morning, and it seemed to work out okay, so he got in for another after we returned to get cleaned up.

Seemed to really enjoy the Roast Filet Mignon meat I had cooked for dinner, along with salad, green beans, wheat english muffin and cheesecake for dessert. Played a little bit of cribbage with Ryland. Needed help, but did set his hand correctly without help a couple of times. Also seemed to be able to count the cards with prompting.

Day 2 in California

Dad slept quite well...finally roused him around 9:30am, then toileted and washed up in the bathroom. Had pancakes for breakfast. Seemed a bit more confused and lethargic today...perhaps due to jetlag. It was a gorgeous clear day here, but on the cooler side (for us)...60's. Dad sat outside for a while. I walked him to the edge of my deck to look at the ocean and he noticed some ships. He then said "I could just die right here right now"...and I wasn't sure if it was because he felt tired or because he appreciated the view! I reminded him that he had once told me that after he died he wanted his ashes spread on the Pacific, but I didn't really get a response to that.

ANyway, it was a bit busy here today as a group of my girlfriends with kids had come to visit (my original West LA roommates/girlfriends...hadn't all gotten together in several years). 3 of them have only daughters, ages 7 to 11. We had lunch together at the house with Dad, but Dad didn't eat much. Dad stayed with Paul while we all went for a nice walk by the cliffs. On our return, Ken and family had arrived for their visit with Dad. Dad mostly stayed in the family room watching the football game, but initiated getting up several times, often seeming a big confused and/or saying "we need to set up the program.." and other gibberish. Judy, Ken, Dylan and I sat with him for awhile, and Judy gave us some tips and comparisons with her experiences at the Sunrise facility. Dad had a late snack (mini-sandwich, grapes), then Judy and Ken helped Dad in the bathroom before departing around 6pm. Dad had dinner a little later (chinese chick salad, eng muffin, slice of pizza) and milk and cookies. Had his 2nd Bowel movement in as many days here on the toilet (yeah!...it's all about the poops at our house!) and cleaned up and went to bed around 9:30pm.

Dad's arrival in California, December 27, 2008

Dad and Ken arrived without incident. Dylan and I had driven to the airport to pick them up. Ken said Dad only ate half a sandwich on the plane, so when he arrived at my house, after going to the bathroom and freshening up, he had a light meal of macaroni and cheese, english muffin and apricots (and took meds). He went right for the meal without prompting, and commented that the apricots were "really tasty". After eating, he sat on the couch with me, Ryland and Dylan watching the end of Oceans 13. Is now toileting before bedtime, around 10:15pm PST.

Though he asked some of the same questions repeatedly, overall he seems more alert than I expected. He definitely seemed intrigued with Dylan and Ryland, commenting that I had a blonde and a brunette, and I was halfway between!

I have set up the intercom to "monitor" his room (like we do Dylan's)...hopefully he will sleep comfortably through the night.

Dad Gets a New Identification Card

I just realized a couple of days ago that Dad would be asked for picture ID at the airport. He has a VA card, (but no drivers license). [I didn't want to have to carry his birth certificate-it is fragile and falling apart.]

So I went to the DMV. I needed two forms of ID so I had to go back home. I got a copy of his birth certificate. But they needed the original. Also Dad had to come and get a new picture.

After two trips, I brought his DD-214 and his original birth certificate and Dad! Bettie came also. I said I would drop her off at the shopping center for an hour. But she said no to that. She helped Dad negotiate the steps at the place.

I didn't have to wait too long. I guess a lot of people must be out shopping!

I also bought Dad some new pants. He only has one pair that is not falling off. I only had to make two trips to figure out the correct size. And I still have to return some. But I don't mind; I always have to return and exchange my own clothes at least once (especially when I don't try them on in the store!)

More Thoughts on Dad's Visit with Dr. Lichstein

Well, here are some things I left out of the last blog.

Dr. Lichstein asked why Dad's left side of his mouth was drooping. I said does that mean he had a stroke? Dr. Lichstein asked my Dad to raise his arms up and then he said he didn't think so.

We talked about Dad's itching. Dr. Lichstein asked if Rx cream was doing any good--I said it seemed to work for about an hour. [Looking back, he hasn't scratched as much as he had been doing about a month ago]. I told him he takes claritin for it as well.

I also talked about Hospice as a place for Dad to go to. He said that they don't take Alzheimer patients. But I was only thinking of it as a place for late stages of life (like last couple of weeks?). He wasn't sure of that situation.

I might think of other things. I will try to write them down later.

Dad's Visit with Dr. Lichstein

Dad visited Dr. Lichstein last Thursday.

First of all, Dad weighs 146. He has gradually lost about 10 pounds. I just noticed it recently in the last couple of weeks. I had to replace the large size Depends with medium size.

Dad's BP was 166. Dr. Lichstein did not comment on this during the visit. Later that week at home his BP was 130.

Dad was somewhat apathetic. I think it has something to do with the cold. Though Dr. Lichstein mentioned that Dad probably will gradually becoming more ? this coming year. [not sure what the word is].

Dr. Lichstein told Dad that he was "very expensive", when I mentioned moving to save money. I then mentioned to Dad that he used to tell us that it costs about $100,000 to raise each of us. I asked Dr. Lichstein about Dad living at my house. He also asked (like Justine) whether I could handle the burden of it. He seemed to think the chair lift was okay, though. His sister has one.

I told Dr. Lichstein about the visit to California and he reminded me to tell the airline about using wheelchairs, etc.

Dr. Lichstein renewed Dad's prescriptions. Dad got a flu shot. He also got a blood test, to test thyroid and other things.

Dad and the Election

A few weeks ago I requested a absentee ballot for Dad. I asked him though what he wanted to vote for Democrat or Republican, I didn't want to assume anything, but I was very glad he said Democrat. He didn't say much else, but he told Dot today that he knew that there had been an election and that the Democrats won. When she asked him who won he said Obama.

This past Friday Dad was not sleepy at all. He wanted to know where his money was and wanted to see a pay statement. I found the bank statement and he was very angry about how the money was being spent, saying he couldn't afford it. I told Bettie that he was wide awake but she still said she wouldn't mind coming in. She was worried it upset me--it did a little, but not as much as she assumed. But I was glad to leave Dad that evening.

Sunday he was very sleepy most of the day. He revived again in the evening, telling me how stupid I was, etc. That he couldn't afford to spend $100,000 a month. Oh well. It does make me think a bit about how I spend the money!

Dad Was really Talking this weekend

Dad was really speaking this weekend! I didn't really see him much until Saturday afternoon, since I came in late Friday for a short while (and he was sleeping).

Saturday I came in about 5 and left and came back about 10. Dad was watching TV. He went to bed about 11 pm. But he woke up very early. I noticed an odor but didn't arise as quickly as I could have. Dad had turned the oven up to 450 and was attempting to warm up his pants. When I opened the oven I saw the blackened clothes, burning slightly. I quickly tossed them in the sink! Dad tried to touch them. Then he started looking for his pants again! The alarm then went off and a security guard came by and talked with Dad and I for a few minutes. All this time Dad is walking around without his cane! He mentioned that he had fallen, but appeared to be in okay shape.

After breakfast Dad insisted on driving, "just a block". He had been talking the day before about how the car had been wreaked and such. Also he asked where Mom was. Then he seemed shocked when I mentioned Jennie. He said she is married? Really! Then he said that I was married to him. And he asked if my father was still in the Army. (He looked at a card from Norman Short, his naval academy roommate--most of the time he NEVER reads).

He went to the car and even though I was protesting, got into the driver's side. He almost fell trying to get into the car, but managed to steady himself. I had called Chip for some moral support. During the phone call to Chip he seemed very talkative and such. I finally told Dad I should at least drive out the driveway before he drove. Then after that I let Dad steer the wheel, he turned the wheel for a short ways then seemed satisfied with the performance of the car.

Dad talked a lot about his knees hurting him so I rubbed some aspercreme on them. I hope that helped them. Later we decided to call his roommate and he told the roommate how awful he felt, that he had broken both his legs, etc. etc. He said everyone had died, his mother, his father, his sisters, (though he did not mention Mom). He also asked where some building was at the naval academy that he needed to go to. He also mentioned that he wanted him to come to visit but that he would not be able to play golf.

He also kept insisting that I was his wife. [It was flattering I must say.]

At dinner he said he felt he could eat again (he had a hard tine eating his green beans at lunch). It wasn't so much what he said, it was his tone of voice--very positive and he seemed to be able to think, though he sounded like he was a bit amnesic. Even though he asked a lot of questions (some over and over), I was happy that he was talking!

Sunday night asked what he should wear the next day (he had said previously that he felt good enough to go to the office). I said the green pants. He woke me up at 4 am and showed me the blue pants and shirt he had picked out. Then he put the clothes on and sat on the dining room chair a couple of hours till I got up! It was nice that he was able to dress himself.

Dad looks Gaunt

I came by on Wednesday. Dad seemed thin. I don't recall him getting thinner, but I did notice that his belt had to be tightened more lately.

He does have trouble eating at times. I have to remind him to continue eating. So basically he eat about what I eat (but I also eat more snacks later). He never asks for food, though I do offer him nuts and ice cream at night.

Dad's Weekend

This past weekend I worked on Saturday, so Friday was my day off to go the Dixie Fair with Suzie and Ella. We had fun eating deep fried Oreos, deep fried vegetables, lemonade, etc. And enjoying the baby changing tent so Suzie could feed Ella.

Unfortunately Dad had a Number 2 accident in his pants! I think he thought he was passing gas. He got up to use the toilet but it was too late.

I was putting together a jigsaw puzzle and asked where the Kara Sea was. Dad had a sense that where he thought it might be. I had never heard of it. After hours of being totally silent, he said where it was located, just as if he hadn't been quiet for hours. (I have now forgotten what he said.)

I sent away for an absentee ballot for Dad. (I hope he votes for Democrats, but he may vote for John McCain, as he used to really like him!).

Dad's Weekend

Ilene stayed with Dad late this Friday. I came in at 11:30 pm. I picked up Bettie because she was unable to get a ride and drove her to Dad's home.

On Saturday evening I came and picked up Dad. We went to the grocery store with Bettie. Dad enjoyed riding on the electric scooter in the store. Later I drove Dad to the dining hall to get a little walk. He stayed outside on the bench while I went it to get the meal. He talked to a couple of people who were also sitting. We had a nice mahi fish meal.

Sunday Dad woke up about 9 am. He made a sound of surprise when he woke up as if he was being startled, but he went back to sleep for a few more minutes. Maybe scary dreams or perhaps when he wakes up reality hits him hard! Later we went to my house where we ate the meal that I picked up. I added some roasted vegetables (zucchini, squash, eggplant, red onion and red, orange and yellow peppers). The dining room is getting into a rut of plain green beans and too-buttery carrots.

Dot came over last night for a few hours and gave Dad a shower. Before she came over he went over to the shower stall and tried to get into it

Dad seemed a little apathetic this weekend but this morning seemed more lively (maybe the shower woke him up?) He put on his pants by himself and seemed willing to do the exercise bike contraption. Earlier this weekend he didn't want to do it--said he wasn't able to do it!

This morning I noticed Dad hadn't had a bowel movement since Friday. So I asked Dot (who is watching Dad tonight) to give him the rest of the prune juice in the can and give him an overnight laxative.

Bettie will be coming in tonight about 11:30. Ilene will be coming earlier on Wednesday to help with grocery shopping. She has a gift card from Food Lion to use.

Dad More Active this Weekend

Saturday Dad walked around the house more. Bettie reported that she got up at 6 am and couldn't find Dad. He was in the garage sitting in the car. I guess he wanted to go somewhere. He told Bettie he wished he could drive. Bettie said she wished she could drive him but she doesn't drive (she was in an accident a few years ago and didn't drive after that).

On Sunday morning he woke up about 6 am and went into the kitchen. He started to make coffee, putting water in the pot, but then stopped. He did put the coffee itself in the refrigerator. Then he went to bed again. Later he came into the kitchen, (without being helped out of bed), and said "Did you feed the children" (implying I was Mom!). Later he asked did I feed my children (he might have been trying to say that he knew I was his daughter, Not Mom!

At my house Dad asked for more chicken, (usually he justs eats what is on the plate only). Later that afternoon he went to the kitchen and searched for something to eat.

He was more expressive when he was talking, telling me he wished he could do something about the nails in his legs. (I gave him some Ibuprofen.). He said that he was sorry he couldn't drive but his legs were not well.

He also asked me some questions about why my last boyfriend left me. And he continued the conversation, what did he do when you broke up, how did he feel, etc.

Later we watched the football game and enjoyed the Panthers last second winning touchdown. I also watched the tennis US Open with Dad.

It was a nice evening. Dad watched another football game, but later said it was a waste of time it took place too far away.

Dad tries to play poker

Last Saturday night I fell asleep watching Saturday Night Live. I woke up and found Dad had pulled a dining room chair to the very front of the TV and was watching a poker game on TV.

Dad tried to play poker by using the remote control to move the cards that were being displayed on the screen. He really wanted to play!

The next time it comes on I will try to record it so that he can watch during the day as I think the games are normally on after midnight when he is normally asleep.
